Re: HP 890C & Windows 7

Not so much..... It appears that HP isn't allowing the use of the 890C driver for XP to be used in the JetDirect 300X print server for Win7.  I say this because I setup the 300X to be a print server for my Desktop XP machine first and it works just like it was connected to the LPT port on the Desktop, prints just fine (Using version 8.2 of HP Install Network Printer Wizard). I then shared the Networked 890C printer for the rest of the network through the Desktop, and still works just fine with Windows7 Laptops.

I then went into my router and found the IP adress of the added network printer since I figured I'd need it and I found it easily. 

I then went to the Laptop and ran version 8.2 of HP Install Network Printer Wizard, where it could not find the driver that was already on the Laptop (since it was used for printing through the Desktop).  I then went to Windows Update, and it couldn't find a better driver and still wouldn't work.  I went to and downloaded the driver from Cnet, and althought it says it supports Windows 2003, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT, it wouldn't go either.   So I then went to HP Product Support for the JetDirect300:

and found the printer isn't even supported with XP, I guess I've been lucky to have it still work anyway... :-|

So.... although the HP Install Network Printer Wizard suports Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 64-bit, Windows XP, Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Vista, Windows Vista 64-bit, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 and Windows 7  64-bit, the JetDirect print server itself is not "directly" supported for the OS and this must be why it's not going to work with the 890C Printer. 

All I can say is .... BUMMER.  email me if you find out something different and you're able to make it work. I don't really want an unsuported XP machine on my network, but I don't want to buy a different printer either. I wish I could find a simple print serve that will do the job with a parallel connection.
