I compared the XP-registry of my Laptop, where the F4580 works, with that of a computer elsewhere, which never had a USB scanner attached. In the latter, there is no reference to USBSCAN, while in my laptop, there are several.
The OfficeJet 6110 software did install Director. But there was still no access to the scanner. Then I looked at the Win2K registry. There were merely three references to a file called USBSCAN.SY_ in the HP folder. Attempting to expand USBSCAN.SY_ showed, that it was identical with USBSCAN.SYS. After renaming the file and the registry entries I rebooted and the system correctly recognized the existence of a new image device, but asked to install the driver. Not having one, I canceled this. As the scanner still did not work, I reinstalled the aiodrv.msi (setup.exe did not work). As a result, I was back to the previous situation of having USBSCAN.SY_ in the registry, but no USBSCAN.SYS. Replacing the HP-USBSCAN in the registry with the Win2K one did not help.
So my last chance is get back to using the HP-USBSCAN.SYS and then manually install the correct .inf file from the F4580 package or from the 6110 package. There are too many .inf files to try them all. Which one is it?
