Check the settings in the driver. For normal portrait pages you would want to select "flip on long edge". Changing from "flip on short edge" to "flip on long edge" will "flip" the back side differently.
I just dusted off a Vista machine, loaded the full featured driver for the Officejet 8600 and verified that it does respond appropriately depending on the settings.
