Hello aanorm69. I have encountered the error you are witnessing in the past. I have some steps that I believe will resolve the issue for you:
1. Go to uninstall the Photosmart 5510 software from Control Panel. While you uninstall, that error message should pop up. When it does, you will have three options: Retry, Cancel and Ignore. If you click Ignore, it was actually ignore the error and uninstall the software. You need to restart the computer afterward.
2. Once that is done, install the printer software. This way, you should be able to scan, and eliminate the error state.
