The Deskjet 970 Cse or Cxi driver is a better match for the Photosmart 1000 than the Deskjet 990 driver. The Deskjet 990 has some image processing features the Photosmart 1000 did not support.
What port is selected for the printer? Click Start, Devices and Printers, right click on the printer and select Printer Properties, Ports. What port is assigned? Do you have the printer connected with a parallel cable or a USB cable?
