Should I update an HP printer powered on or powered off??

Hi everyone

So I came across my uncle in the neighborhood who has been having problems with his HP D2560 deskjet printer in his area. He told me that he has updated his printer 'powered off' and now he can't seem to gain access to the printer so I went to: Start > All Programs > HP > HP Printer update but to no luck that it didn't do anything at all.

Then after a while, I had this troublesome HP D2660 printer at home because I updated it 'powered off'  somewhere in Summer '13 January and it hasn't been working since. I went again to HP to get updates through the same process and whatdayaknow; It worked again although but when I click to 'HP Solution Center' it gave me an error 'cannot establish a two-way connection with the printer'.

I am so messed right now up to this time as to there is no indication anywhere on the HP software or the website itself as to how do users proceed to updating their HP software device or driver as to I am considering into updating my printer as well to another brand maybe... perhaps...

I noticed that in HP update, sometimes an update is provided for the necessary components like 'HP Update Software Utility' but is it really helpful? In updating add-on devices such as printers and scanners, is there such thing as 'flashing' the ROM during the 'Update' because it says in the descriptions that it installs drivers again??

When we first installed our HP printers, we were asked to connect our USB device on a certain instance of the installation so is it also necessary when using 'HP Update'??

Thanks for everything everyone and God speed to the max!
