Problem seems solved for me. I have D7560 Photosmart that gave me fits when I switched to Win 8. No specific driver for Win 8 for this apparently antique printer. Discovered I couldn't share it anymore and I started getting baraged with alerts when ink got low. I was getting about 10 alerts per page for each low ink cartridge. One alert for low ink, another alert telling me not to remove a cartridge until I had a new one.
Turning off "Advanced Printing Features" stopped the alerts. In Win 8 this is done a little differently that older versions. I'm using "Start 8" which gives me the old windows look and a start menu. In the start menu I click "Devices and Printers" then right click on the printer to get the pop-up menu. Select "Printer Properties" (not plain Properties). In the advanced tab uncheck Advanced Printing Features and Apply.
