This is a strange issue but happens to me too. I can solve it change or use an alternative driver deskjet 990c.
I add manually a new local printer and left the LPT1 port, after that select HP and Deskjet 990c until finnish the assistance.
After that, enter in 990c properties and in "port" tab, change the port for the same as deskjet 2540 and apply.
could you please try and confirm if solve the issue?
