Can you walk me through the steps that you are taking when you do get the error message 'An error has occurred saving the file because it could not be written to.  Check the properties of the file to make sure it is not read-only'. What options are you selecting on the when you scan to computer? Are you getting the error message when transferring the file from one place to iPhoto? What are  you saving the scanned image as? Are you using the HP Scan software to scan?

To confirm are you using Mac OS X 10.6? I have included the document 'Finding your OS X version and build information'.
